Work is Progressing
The Driveway itself involved a great deal of work. Remarkably, it was possible to obtain a lot of rubble that was freely available and being removed from another site in Oswiecim.
The red brick that you can see in the photograph is from a demolished building that was once part of the massive IG Farben complex that was established in Oswiecim to produce synthetic rubber and liquid fuel. In March 1942, the directors of the company signed a contract with the SS in order to use prisoners from Auschwitz as slave labor. Initially, the prisoners were used to build the factory complex (shown in the black and white photo below). Subsequently, the prisoners were forced to build barracks for a new sub-camp – Auschwitz III [Buna/Monowitz]. In addition to the actions of the SS, prisoners were brutally treated by special commandos specifically employed by the management of the company. Tens of thousands of prisoners died.
IG Farben also held the patent for the pesticide Zyklon B which was used in the gas chambers at Birkenau. Furthermore, the company owned over 40% of the shares of a daughter company called Degesch (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schädlingsbekämpfung) which manufactured it. We are reminded of the words of the Prophet Jeremiah:
‘Those who plunder you will be plundered; all who make spoil of you I will despoil. But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD, ‘because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.’ Jeremiah 30:16-17
